Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic skin condition in children, affecting up to 20% of children in developed countries. For many children, eczema is mild and manageable with basic skincare. For others, it is severe and significantly affects quality of life, for both the child and the entire family.
How Eczema Affects Children
Beyond the physical symptoms, atopic dermatitis in children is associated with:
- Chronic sleep disruption due to nighttime itching
- School attendance problems
- Social difficulties and bullying related to appearance
- Parental anxiety and caregiver burden
- Higher rates of food allergies, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (the “atopic march”)
When Standard Treatments Are Not Enough
For children with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis, moisturizers and topical corticosteroids are typically adequate. For moderate-to-severe disease that does not respond adequately to standard care, additional options, including biologics and clinical trials, may be worth discussing with your child’s physician.
Biologic Options for Children
Dupilumab (Dupixent) is approved for children as young as 6 months. Tralokinumab and other agents are being studied in pediatric populations.
NuLine’s NEMLUVIO Observational Study
