There are thousands of clinical trials actively recruiting participants in the United States at any given time. But how do you find a legitimate study, and avoid wasting time on studies you don’t qualify for?
The Official Registry: ClinicalTrials.gov
The FDA requires that most clinical trials in the United States be registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, a database maintained by the National Library of Medicine. You can search by:
- Condition (e.g., atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne)
- Location (enter your city, state, or zip code)
- Distance (set a radius from your location)
- Status (filter for studies that are actively recruiting)
Each listing includes the eligibility criteria, study contact information, and a description of what participation involves.
Signs of a Legitimate Clinical Trial
- The study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov with an NCT number
- The site is affiliated with a hospital, university, or established research clinic
- The consent process is thorough and unhurried
- You are never charged money to participate
- The study has IRB approval
Red Flags
- You are asked to pay to participate
- Promises of a guaranteed cure or miracle results
- Pressure to sign consent immediately without time to review
- No IRB or regulatory information provided
