Similarly, filaggrin gene mutations in atopic dermatitis identify patients with the most severe barrier defects, who may benefit from more aggressive barrier repair therapy.
Biomarkers and Patient Stratification in Modern Trials
Modern clinical trials increasingly use biomarkers to stratify patients before enrollment, ensuring that trial populations are homogeneous enough to detect meaningful differences between treatment and placebo groups.
For example, an atopic dermatitis trial may enroll only patients with elevated blood eosinophil counts or confirmed filaggrin mutations, because these biomarkers predict which patients are most likely to respond to the specific biological mechanism being targeted.
This approach benefits participants: rather than a one-size-fits-all trial, patients are matched to trials designed for their biological profile.
